Centennial Woods Threatened by Development

In February of 2021, Keep Media Green and a group of neighbors living near the Centennial Woods met with Brian Hall, President of Media Borough Council, and Peter Williamson, Council’s Finance Chair. We requested that Media Borough purchase the 1.1-acre property located at 115 West 6th Street (extending all the way to Centennial Avenue) where B&G Properties, LLC planned to build four luxury houses. We asked our local elected officials to take action to save one of Media’s last significant stands of woods, including a 100+ year-old Oak tree and other mature Oaks, Maples, and Tulips. At the March 18, 2021 Borough Council meeting, Brian Hall announced that B&G Properties was willing to sell the property for $1.5 million, BUT Council had decided to reject that option. Keep Media Green opposes ANY housing development on the Centennial Woods and is advocating for Media Borough to purchase the property, clean it up, prune the trees that require care, and preserve a town treasure. DID YOU KNOW? Delaware County has $4.5 million in a Green Ways Fund to help municipalities acquire land to preserve open space, BUT our Borough Council has refused to consider applying for a grant to help pay to purchase the Centennial Woods. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources also has a grant program to help municipalities acquire land to preserve open space, BUT our Borough Council has refused to consider applying for a State grant to help pay to purchase the Centennial Woods. The house at 115 W. 6th Street could be renovated and sold by the Borough, or the house could be demolished and a parcel of land sold to help the Borough pay to purchase the Centennial Woods, BUT our Borough Council has refused to consider this option. In fact, Borough Council has refused to appraise the value of the land, evaluate the condition of the house, or calculate the potential resale value of the house and/or parcel of land. It’s “too hard.”

MEDIA BOROUGH CAN SAVE THE CENTENNIAL WOODS.
